This presentation examines strategies to improve mobility and safety along the I-476 corridor through the implementation of Active Traffic Management and Hard Shoulder Running. It summarizes the project purpose and need, including traffic modeling efforts used to identify the corridor's most significant bottlenecks and a review of historical crash trends. The presentation also explores operational tools available to manage congestion associated with peak-hour demand, special events, and traffic incidents, while highlighting comparable Active Lane Management deployments in the region. Finally, it presents the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) components being implemented, including new fiber-optic communications infrastructure, changeable message signs, Hard Shoulder Running systems, ATMS upgrades, additional traffic detectors, and new MUTCD-compliant signs and pavement markings.
